UAV Aerial Imagery – Geelong Sports Lighting Assets

The City of Greater Geelong Council recently undertook an audit of public lighting assets across their multiple sporting grounds throughout Geelong and the Bellarine and engaged Swanson Surveying to conduct a UAV survey in order to provide several drone images of each light to aid in the inspection process.

The project encompassed 42 sports fields with an approx total of 430 lights and consisted of 3 components – electrical inspection, individual LUX testing and aerial imaging and audit of each light. Swanson Surveying assisted with this final component using our DJI Phantom 4 UAV to capture clear, comprehensive images to overlay with the findings from the ground and electrical crews.

A logistically complex job, we were required to coordinate 2 crews to be available at short notice due to the unpredictability of the weather, since dry, windless conditions are needed for safe drone flying. The works however were completed ahead of schedule after our team logged 19 hours of flying and captured 2000 plus images of 498 lights over the 42 sites.
